WHO WE ARE

Yankton County's Path to Preservation

The citizens of Yankton County created the Historic Preservation Commission in the general election of 2014 as a way to support historic preservation, especially the Mead Building.  The South Dakota state hospital campus and the Mead Building have a rich history in Yankton. Most families in the area include one or more members who worked or volunteered at the hospital. While the Yankton County Historical Society's mission is to preserve the entire history of our region, the Mead Cultural Education Center stands as a grand tribute to the dedicated workers who served South Dakota at the hospital.

WHAT WE DO

Yankton County's Historic Buildings are Worth Saving...

The Yankton County Historic Preservation Commission was created primarily to assist with the restoration process and support the Mead Building. We also strive to support other worthy preservation projects in Yankton County as funding permits. We cannot assist private residential or commercial enterprises. Non-profit groups are invited to submit applications. We act as an advisory board on historic preservation issues in Yankton County. We are not a lobbying or advocacy group.
